Closed die forgings are a forging process in which dies move towards each other and completely or partially cover the workpiece. The heated raw material is placed in the bottom die, roughly the shape or size of the final forged part. The forging shape is incorporated as a negative image in the top or bottom die. The effect of the top die on the raw material from above forms it into the required forged form.

  • Different dies may be used to shape the metal part for another shaping die. This gradual shaping allows for the production of more intricate and high-quality parts.

The calculation of the required forces for closed die forgings processes is not as straightforward as for open die forging processes. Geometrical complexities and flash formation cause this calculation difficulty.

First, you must define a forging shape factor 'Kf' from the table. People can use other authorities' tables as well. Another option is flashless forging.

 

Advantages And Other Characteristics of Closed Die Forging:

 

  • The ability to produce in large quantities is the most significant advantage of closed die forging operations.
  • Close tolerances are also possible. Compared to alternative methods, the strength of the produced parts is superior, and material savings are very good.
  • However, people must apply additional processes after the closed die forging processes. The precise geometry is obtained through additional processes such as machining.
