What IS Closed Die Forgings, And What's The Importance of It?
Closed die forgings are a forging process in which dies
move towards each other and completely or partially cover the workpiece. The
heated raw material is placed in the bottom die, roughly the shape or size of
the final forged part. The forging shape is incorporated as a negative image in
the top or bottom die. The effect of the top die on the raw material from above
forms it into the required forged form.
Impression Die Forging:
Closed die forging operations, also known as
impression-die forging processes, are used to shape metal workpieces into the
desired shapes. In the metal industry, closed die forging processes have many
applications.
Closed Die Forging Methods:
- The
negative shape of the exact desired final shape is formed by two opposite
dies in the closed die forging process. When the die is pushed against the
metal piece, the metal piece takes on the shape of the entire closed die,
similar to how the open die forging processes work.
- There
is a small space between the two opposing dies. Metal squeezes through
this small opening and fills it. These metal flashes are trimmed when the
metal cools. You can also use our eyebolts for your need.
- The
purpose of these metal flashes is to create extra pressure on the metal
inside the die. It happens when the metal flashes solidify inside the
small gaps. This back pressure causes the metal to take the exact shape of
the die's complex sides.
- Industry
experts must use several consecutive shaping processes to achieve the
exact shape, like open die forging processes.
- Different
dies may be used to shape the metal part for another shaping die. This
gradual shaping allows for the production of more intricate and
high-quality parts.
Closed Die Forging Force
Calculations:
The calculation of the required forces for closed die forgings processes
is not as straightforward as for open die forging processes. Geometrical
complexities and flash formation cause this calculation difficulty.
First, you must define a forging shape factor 'Kf'
from the table. People can use other authorities' tables as well. Another
option is flashless forging.
Advantages And Other Characteristics
of Closed Die Forging:
- The
ability to produce in large quantities is the most significant advantage
of closed die forging operations.
- Close
tolerances are also possible. Compared to alternative methods, the
strength of the produced parts is superior, and material savings are very
good.
- However,
people must apply additional processes after the closed die forging
processes. The precise geometry is obtained through additional processes
such as machining.
In general, closed die forging operations yield a
product with a near-net shape.
